Fine hardware has a language all of it's own. If you are new to the hardware industry, you might find the following definitions helpful.

  • CTC - When measuring a pull, "center to center". The distance from the center of one post to the center of the other.
  • Double Cylinder - A lockset keyed on both sides of the door.
  • DWO - Discontinued When Out of Stock. Our warehouses might still have the item in stock, but the manufacturer is no longer making the item.
  • Dummy - A dummy knob is a regular knob, without the turning/locking mechanism. Single dummies have one knob, where full dummies have two (one for each side of the door/panel).
  • Handing - Most leversets are required to be handed, as are some hinges. Depending on how your door opens, the lever has to face a particular direction in order for the latch to fit into the frame.
  • Mortise Locks - Mortise locks are similar to the old-fashioned lockset on your grandparents’ front door with the two little push buttons on the edge of the door.  They are sometimes considered to be more secure than tubular locksets.  One advantage to a mortise lock is that you have the ability to customize the trim set with any knob/lever or finish combinations.  Mortise locksets are recommended for wooden or fiberglass doors, but are very difficult to adapt to steel doors.
Note To Our Customers: All mortise prices only include trim. .
  • Passage - A passage door set allows unresricted entry from either side of your door. Most commonly seen in closet doors and door to shared living quarters, such as a family room.
  • Privacy - A privacy door set has a push-button locking mechanism on one side of the knob. Most commonly used on bedroom/bathroom doors, enabling the homeowner to lock the door behind them.
  • SGL - Single. As seen in the Alno catalog, with reference to cabinet hardware.
  • Single Cylinder - A lockset keyed on one side of the door.
  • Split Finish - Most commonly seen in bathrooms, where the outside knob matches the home's finish, and the inside knob matches the bathroom fixtures, accessories, etc. For example, a brass outer knob and a chrome inner knob.
  • Tubular Locks - Tubular locks are less expensive to purchase and install but do not have the breadth of styles and finishes available.
